Tool notes & guidance

How to use this tool

  1. Choose one person, a valuation date and one currency. Select quick totals or the detailed worksheet.
  2. Enter assessed eligible values once, permitted deductions and a verified Nisab. Confirm the lunar-year condition and flag unresolved treatment.
  3. Calculate and check the full estimate, threshold comparison and any credited payments. Print the breakdown for review.

How the Zakat estimate is calculated

Prepare your figures

Choose one valuation date. Gather cash and bank balances, eligible metal values, business assets and other eligible wealth. Enter only deductions permitted by the scholarly method you follow. Jewellery, investments, pensions and long-term debts may need specialist guidance.

Formula and worked example

Eligible net wealth = eligible assets − permitted deductions, with a minimum of zero. Conditional lunar-year estimate = net wealth × 2.5%. For example, £12,000 of eligible assets less £2,000 of permitted deductions leaves £10,000; the conditional estimate is £250. The tool does not call it due until your entered Nisab and confirmed lunar-year condition are met.

Avoid double counting

Use the gold calculator to value eligible metal, then enter that value here. Do not add the separate gold Zakat estimate again to this result. Enter current values, rather than income received over the entire year.

Zakat calculation questions

What if I do not know my Nisab?

The result remains conditional. Obtain a current threshold in your currency, using the weight convention and metal basis recommended by your trusted authority.

Does Ramadan determine my Zakat date?

Use the anniversary and holding-period guidance appropriate to your circumstances. The calculator does not assume that every person’s obligation begins in Ramadan.

Do I pay on my total savings or only this year’s increase?

This worksheet takes a snapshot of eligible wealth on your valuation date. It does not subtract the assets assessed last year or last year’s Zakat payment. Holding-period questions for new wealth still need your chosen guidance.

Can I deduct my whole mortgage or student loan?

Do not automatically enter the entire loan balance. Schools and contemporary approaches differ on whether and which debts can be deducted. Confirm the permitted portion, enter it once, and use “No debt deductions” when appropriate to your chosen method.

Should I enter my whole pension pot?

No automatic pension percentage is applied here. Confirm the scheme type, ownership and underlying eligible assets with a qualified adviser. Enter the assessed eligible amount and leave treatment unresolved until checked.

Does saving money for Hajj or a house automatically exempt it?

A savings goal alone does not determine eligibility. Assess money that you own under your chosen guidance; do not deduct a future purchase simply because the money has been earmarked.

How do I include money someone owes me?

Check whether the debt is recoverable and how your authority treats it. Enter only the eligible amount. Business invoices have a separate field; do not enter the same receivable twice.

What if my spouse and I own an asset together?

Use one person’s worksheet at a time and enter that person’s eligible ownership share. A joint bank balance, partnership or jointly owned jewellery should not automatically be counted in full for both people.

Why do calculators show different amounts?

Compare valuation dates, metal prices, Nisab basis and weight convention, jewellery treatment, investment and pension valuation, and debt policy. Similar-looking forms can apply different assumptions.

Does changing currency convert my figures?

No. The currency selector changes the display currency. Convert foreign holdings using your verified valuation-date rate before entering them, and re-enter amounts and prices if you change the currency.

Can I subtract Zakat I already paid?

The payment field records amounts you have confirmed belong to this same obligation. It reduces the remaining estimate, not eligible wealth. Ordinary Sadaqah, last year’s payment and permission to delay need separate consideration.

Does this calculate missed Zakat, agricultural produce or livestock?

No. This worksheet covers monetary wealth and assessed eligible assets for one valuation date, using a 2.5% lunar-year estimate. Missed years, crops, livestock and other special categories require separate treatment.
