Tool notes & guidance

How to use this tool

  1. Replace the example Edinburgh coordinates with your actual latitude and longitude, or choose optional location access.
  2. Calculate the bearing and read it clockwise from true north.
  3. Use an appropriate local reference or calibrated compass, accounting for magnetic declination and nearby interference.

Read a calculated Qibla bearing correctly

What the number means

The result is an initial great-circle bearing to the Kaaba, measured clockwise from true north. It is calculated from latitude and longitude, not from a live compass sensor.

Using the tool

Search your coordinates elsewhere or allow location permission here. The initial example coordinates are Edinburgh; replace them for another place. Blank coordinates are rejected rather than assumed to be zero.

True north and magnetic north

A physical compass points towards magnetic north. Magnetic declination and nearby metal can affect the direction you measure. Treat the bearing as a reference and use a suitably calibrated compass or a trusted local orientation.

Example in practice

The example Edinburgh coordinates 55.9533° N, 3.1883° W produce approximately 119.5° clockwise from true north. Replace those coordinates when using the tool elsewhere. This is a bearing example, not a live compass reading.

Common questions

Does the screen rotate towards the Qibla?

No. This tool gives a numerical bearing and does not claim to be a device compass.

Does it send my location to a server?

The Qibla calculation runs locally in your browser after you provide coordinates or allow location access.
