Zakat on UK pensions: scheme types, valuation and questions to ask

By HalalCalculator · Published 7 October 2026 · Updated 7 October 2026 · Educational guidance

At a glance

Identify your pension scheme and obtain guidance on its eligible portion before entering a value. A quoted pension balance, annual retirement income and a fund’s eligible assets are different things. Our worksheet does not automatically include a whole pension pot or apply one percentage to every scheme.

Begin with the scheme documents

Gather a recent statement, the scheme name and type, the valuation date, and any available fund factsheets. Ask the provider to clarify whether the scheme promises benefits or holds an identifiable investment pot. Do not infer the scheme type simply from the employer’s name or the fact that you cannot withdraw money yet.

Read a source’s method before its percentage

NZF distinguishes defined benefit and defined contribution arrangements, assessing the latter through underlying eligible assets under its approach. Its guidance uses fund-specific estimates as well as discussing proxies. Other guidance may differ. A proxy chosen for a particular fund or asset mix should not be treated as a universal pension rate.

Information to prepare

Document or detailWhy it helps
Scheme typeDistinguishes a benefit promise from an investment pot
Statement date and valueKeeps the assessment tied to one valuation date
Fund names and allocationsIdentifies the holdings requiring assessment
Verified eligible proportion or valueProvides an input under your chosen approach
Prior-year recordsHelps an adviser assess any past-year questions separately

An illustrative arithmetic example

If an adviser has assessed £8,000 of a hypothetical £40,000 pot as eligible, the attributable 2.5% arithmetic is £200. In the complete worksheet, enter the £8,000 eligible value, not the £200 payment and not both £8,000 and £40,000. This example uses an invented assessed value to explain the input; it does not recommend a 20% pension proxy.

Avoid counting investments twice

A shareholding inside a pension and a personally held shareholding outside it are separate assets. If your pension assessment already includes its underlying holdings, do not enter those same holdings again in the general investments field. Label your records by account or wrapper so you can trace each value.

Access, timing and previous years

A restriction on withdrawals does not by itself settle the scholarly assessment. Ask separately about current eligibility, payment timing and previous years under the approach you follow. This one-date worksheet does not calculate a multi-year pension obligation or authorise a payment deferral.

Use the assessed value in the worksheet

In the detailed calculator, enter the confirmed eligible portion in the pension field. If it remains unresolved, keep the treatment review unconfirmed. Combine it with other eligible wealth, permitted deductions, Nisab and the lunar-year check rather than treating the pension estimate as a standalone eligibility decision.

A useful question to send your adviser

Describe your scheme, funds, statement date and access restrictions. Ask: “Under the method I follow, what eligible value should I record for this valuation date, how should it be valued, and are there separate timing or prior-year questions?” Attach the relevant statement securely when communicating with the adviser. Review the debt guide if liabilities also affect the calculation.

Common questions

Is there one pension percentage for everyone?

No. Scheme type, holdings and scholarly method matter. Obtain an assessed eligible value rather than automatically including the whole pot or an arbitrary percentage.

Does the worksheet calculate all my missed pension years?

No. It covers one valuation date. Take prior statements and timing questions to a qualified adviser for a separate assessment.
