Gold Zakat: understanding weight, purity and valuation
By HalalCalculator · Published 6 October 2026 · Updated 7 October 2026 · Educational guidance
Gold jewellery may be 24, 22, 21, 18 or another carat rating. The number describes purity, not weight. A useful valuation approach is to calculate pure gold equivalent: total grams × carat ÷ 24. Check the hallmark or ask a reputable jeweller when the purity is uncertain.

A simple valuation example
A 20-gram item at 18 carat contains a calculated pure gold equivalent of 15 grams. If your verified 24-carat price is £80 per gram, its calculated metal value is £1,200. The price here is an example, not a current quotation. Stones and other non-gold components should not be included as gold weight.
Choose a relevant price
Use a price in your chosen currency and note its date. Retail jewellery prices may include labour, design and margins, so they are not always a good proxy for the metal’s value. Confirm the valuation basis with the guidance you follow.
Jewellery treatment varies
Scholarly approaches differ on personal-use jewellery. A valuation calculator should not silently choose a ruling for you. Our tool shows the metal valuation and a conditional 2.5% estimate; combine it with your other eligible wealth and check eligibility before treating it as a payment due.
Avoid counting the same gold twice
If you enter the gold’s value in the complete Zakat calculator, do not also add the separate gold estimate to the final result. Use the gold tool as a valuation step, then carry the value into the full asset list.
Compare purity before comparing prices
| Item weight | Purity | Pure-gold equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 20g | 24 carat | 20g |
| 20g | 22 carat | 18.333g |
| 20g | 18 carat | 15g |
| 20g | 9 carat | 7.5g |
A mixed-jewellery example
Suppose you have 20g of 18-carat gold and 10g of 22-carat gold, excluding stones. Their pure-gold equivalents are 15g and approximately 9.1667g. At an illustrative £80 per pure gram, their combined metal value is approximately £1,933.33. If both items are eligible under your approach, enter their combined value into the complete wealth calculation. The conditional 2.5% arithmetic alone does not establish liability.
The double-adjustment trap
The tool asks for a 24-carat price because it already adjusts your weight for carat. If you enter a price already discounted for 18-carat gold, then also select 18 carat, you reduce the value twice. Confirm both the purity and the price basis before calculating.
What to record
Keep each item’s weight, purity, valuation basis, price date and eligibility decision. Use the Nisab calculator to explore the relevant threshold and the complete Zakat calculator for combined wealth. A single household list can be useful, but keep ownership separate when assessing each person’s wealth.
Common questions
Can I combine jewellery of different purities?
Value each purity separately, then add the eligible monetary values. Do not apply one carat rating to a mixed collection.
Can I enter a price per ounce?
The calculator requires a verified price per gram of pure gold. Convert the quote to the correct unit before using it; do not put an ounce price in the per-gram field.
